Prato

Prato was under the etruscan dominion up to the V-IV century before Christ.
During the Roman times the Pagus Cornius was built and after the fall of the Roman empire around it a town quarter was built. This quarter in the XI  century became the fortess of count Alberto.

The family Alberti will then be named by the emperour ,count of Prato. the very large Alberti feud , which started in the Maremma region up to the Bologna Appenin will be conquered by the Marquise of Canossa after many years of  fights.
The City of Prato as visible  the the affrescos of the Sacra Cintola became a free town and during the XII century managed to win the battle against the town of Pistoia.


Arts and artscraft are florishing during this time and Prato got also organized with its own army.
Prato is pro Guelfi which got organized under the league of free tuscan cities.
First ruled by the Angioini and then by the Guazzalotti  the city exhausted by the plague, will be conquered by the florentine army in year 1350.
In year 1512  Prato is devasted by the Spanish army.


The belonging to the florentine republic in 1351 certainly did not stop the economic growth which starting from half way the XIX century developped a very strong fabric's industries.
The work however did not absorbe totally the intellectual possibilities of Prato, which besides the artistic-historical achievements also offers remarkable cultural meetings of nation wide importance.
